Invisalign Treatment in Toronto
At City Orthodontics, our mission is to help each and every patient achieve a beautiful, healthy smile. Our office strives to make orthodontic treatment convenient for our patients, and we personalize treatment to fit into your lifestyle. Invisalign is one of our most popular and convenient orthodontic treatments – and if you’re getting ready to start treatment with Invisalign, we’ve compiled this simple Invisalign care guide to help you understand how to better care for your aligners.
Using Your Invisalign Aligners
If you’re just getting started with Invisalign treatment, congratulations! You’re on your way to a gorgeous new smile.
When you first get your aligners or start a new set of aligners, be sure to wash them thoroughly with soap and water before inserting them into your mouth. The upper and lower aligners should be easily discernible, but you’ll find a small number on each aligner that delineates whether the aligner is for the upper or lower jaw and which number the aligner is in sequence – for example, U17 would mean the aligner is for the upper teeth and should be the 17th aligner in sequence. L17 would be for the lower jaw.
When inserting the aligners, avoid biting down on them, as this can damage the aligners. Instead, use your fingers to push the aligners into place or use Invisalign “chewies” – small rubber cylinders you can place under the aligners to bite down and set them in place. Use caution when inserting and removing the aligners.
Cleaning Your Aligners
Keeping your aligners clean is vital to the health of your teeth and the progress of your treatment. Be sure to brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste every time you remove them, and to brush your teeth before re-inserting them. Maintaining strong oral hygiene is vital to protecting your teeth and ensuring successful treatment.
Things to Keep in Mind While Wearing Invisalign
Invisalign aligners are discreet and comfortable, but you’ll need to keep a number of things in mind while wearing them.
First and foremost, be sure to remove the aligners before eating or drinking anything besides cool water. This includes food, gum, coffee, and any sugary beverages, as all of these things can pool under the aligners and cause cavities.
Also be sure to avoid using tobacco products while wearing the aligners. Smoke and smokeless tobacco can warp and discolor the aligners, damaging them and hampering your treatment.
Finally, if you ever do have a problem or break an aligner, don’t hesitate to call us at 416.222.3223. We’ll provide instructions for how to care for the aligners and schedule a repair appointment if necessary. If you do break an aligner, switch to your previous set to prevent your teeth from regressing more than necessary.
