Tips for Traveling with Invisalign

A luggage bag with stickers on itWhether it’s a vacation or business trip, traveling while undergoing Invisalign treatment in Toronto requires some planning ahead. If you’ll be taking a trip while improving your smile with Invisalign, we’ve got a few tips to keep in mind when planning your excursion.

Tell Your Orthodontist About Your Travel Plans

When you’re wearing Invisalign, you must change your aligners every two weeks. If you know that your “change” day will happen while you’re away, you’ll need to have your next set of aligners with you. If you don’t have the aligners already, ask your Toronto orthodontists Dr. Kimos or Dr. Dayan to give them to you before you head out of town.

Take Along Your Previous Set of Aligners

If you happen to lose or break an aligner before it’s time to move onto the next aligner, you will need to wear the previous aligner until your orthodontist can order you a replacement. In case this happens, bring your last set of aligners along with you just to be safe.

Carry an Invisalign Kit

It’s a good idea to fill a small zippered pouch or plastic container with all your Invisalign supplies like the previous and next set of aligners, your toothbrush, toothpaste & floss, and whatever aligner cleaning supplies you use.  If you have your past and future Invisalign aligners in the same pouch, make sure to label them or place one in a smaller baggie so you don’t forget which is which. If you’re flying, pack the kit in your carry-on luggage in case your checked-in luggage is delayed or lost.

Be Mindful of the 22 Hour Wear Time

When you’re traveling, it’s easy to forget to keep your aligners in when trying out new foods and drinks and going on adventures like scuba diving where you may not be able to wear the aligners. Even though you’ll be busy, it’s essential that you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours every day to keep your treatment on track.

If You Can’t Brush, Rinse Your Mouth Out with Water

For those times when it’s not convenient or even possible to brush your teeth when traveling, be sure to at least rinse your mouth out with water before putting your aligners back in. Then brush your teeth later, as soon as you have time. This will prevent bacteria from getting trapped between your aligners and teeth and help with keeping your breath fresh.

6 Pro Tips For Wearing Invisalign

Screen Shot 2017-09-18 at 5.16.24 PMIf you just got your first set of Invisalign at our Toronto orthodontic office, you might be a little excited or nervous about living with Invisalign. Wearing your Invisalign will be a slight adjustment to what you’re accustomed to, but we have a few tips for our Toronto Invisalign patients to make living with Invisalign even easier than ever. Here are our top tips for wearing Invisalign in Toronto.

Getting Used To Talking With Invisalign

Invisalign is clear and nearly impossible to see, but the people you are close to might notice something different about you while you’re wearing Invisalign, at least at the beginning of treatment. Even though Invisalign is clear thin and hardly noticeable, you may have a slight lisp when you first start wearing them. Your friends and family may notice the lisp but don’t worry, after a while you will get used to talking with Invisalign, and your lisp will disappear.

The 22-Hour Rule

One of the main reasons our Toronto orthodontic office loves Invisalign so much is because of how effective they are. Typically we see shorter treatment times for patients who are wearing Invisalign when compared to traditional braces. There is one caveat to this though; it only is quicker if you wear them for 22 hours or more a day. This means all day every day unless you’re eating or brushing your teeth, which you should be doing after you eat too. If you don’t wear your Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours a day your treatment time will drastically lengthen.

Invest in Travel Toothbrushes… a Lot of Travel Toothbrushes

This tip is one of the harder parts about wearing Invisalign. Every time you eat or drink anything other than water you need to brush your teeth if you’re wearing Invisalign. If you don’t brush your teeth, bacteria can build up more easily between your aligner and your teeth causing plaque to develop more quickly. Because of this, we highly suggest buying a lot of travel sized toothbrushes and keeping them everywhere. Keep them in your purse,  your pocket,  your desk at work, the car, your friend’s house, their friend’s house, anywhere that you might be eating you should have at least one travel toothbrush.

You Might Lose a Little Weight

This is a benefit for some people and a disadvantage for others. When we see our Toronto Invisalign patients come in for a new set of aligners one of the more common things we hear is “I’ve lost weight because of Invisalign!” Now this doesn’t happen to everyone, but we do see some people lose a few pounds because they would rather leave their aligners in than have a snack in the middle of the day.

Watch What you Drink

One of the more common mistakes we see with our newer Toronto Invisalign wearers is drinking liquids that can easily stain your teeth and Invisalign aligners. Drinks like red wine, coffee, and tea are highly acidic and can discolor your teeth and your aligners. If you ever want to enjoy a glass of wine or your morning cup of joe, just make sure to remove your Invisalign aligners before taking a sip.

Keep Your Invisalign Aligners Clean

Just like your teeth, your Invisalign aligners will have bacteria grow on them over time. Unlike your teeth, you shouldn’t use toothpaste on your Invisalign aligners. Toothpaste is slightly abrasive, which means if used on an Invisalign aligner, it can make micro-scratches on the surface which will eventually turn yellow. We suggest using either denture cleaning tablets or Invisalign’s cleaning crystals at least once a week to clean your Invisalign aligners.

Accelerated Treatment & Invisalign: A Match Made in Heaven

Screen Shot 2017-07-19 at 10.55.27 AMInvisalign system is hard to beat. Using a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten teeth instead of metal braces, Invisalign allows you to straighten your teeth without a latticework of metal, allowing for virtually invisible orthodontic treatment – and because you remove the aligners to eat, you can still enjoy all your favorite foods.

But it’s actually possible to make treatment with Invisalign even more convenient. When combined with an accelerated treatment program like Propel or AcceleDent, Invisalign offers all the advantages of convenient treatment as well as a reduced treatment time. As a premier orthodontist serving the Toronto area, City Orthodontics is proud to provide Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, and accelerated orthodontics at our office – so you can straighten your smile using the most convenient form of treatment on the market.

Combining Convenience with Speed

The Invisalign system is a revolutionary alternative to braces, and it’s gained massive popularity as an orthodontic treatment for good reason. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible when worn, and the ability to still enjoy your favorite foods and maintain oral hygiene normally give it a huge advantage compared to braces. But when Invisalign is combined with accelerated treatment, things hit a whole new level.

Accelerated treatment methods like AcceleDent and Propel Orthodontics are simple, convenient, easy-to-use devices that have been clinically proven to cut treatment times by up to half. These devices use tiny vibrations called micropulses to stimulate the jawbone and gently, safely speed up the movement of teeth. All they require is about 20 minutes of use per day, and your hands are still free while you’re using them, so you can speed up your tooth movement while texting, reading, or surfing the web – making it even more of a convenient solution.
